Yes it was the biggest and best yet…

Well, R.A.F. 2009 is over and our dedicated committee are tying up loose ends (paying bills and such like) and preparing the ground for next year’s festival but all concerned can take a bow because yes, it was the biggest and best Ranelagh Arts Festival yet.

From the Backgammon Session in Humphrey’s Pub on the first Sunday right through to to the festival finale the following Sunday when the Ranelagh Players packed out the R.M.D.S., our events were critical successes and brought great pleasure to all who attended.

It is generally agreed that we brought records crowds into Ranelagh village. One wag said it was the biggest crowd in Ranelagh since Richard Crosbie took off on his Historic Flight but I will leave that up to Sally Corcoran, Brian O’ Sullivan or Honor O Brolchain (our brilliant historical walks team) to adjudicate on.

What a pleasure it was to walk or pedal around the village and see so many people of all ages enjoying themselves in that unique Ranelagh atmosphere which must be the envy of other communities throughout the city. As I prophesied there wasn’t a chip van in sight or a broken bottle on the streets. Sergeant Andy Keegan and his team from Donnybrook Garda Station who kept a friendly eye on proceedings must have been well pleased with the behaviour of all concerned and the only dastardly act I have heard about was the stealing of The Artistic Directors ‘Bike’ from outside the R.M.D.S. on the last night at the last event.

Our dear friends in The Ranelagh Singers and The Ranelagh Players surpassed themselves this year and reached a level of excellence, which we hope we have contributed a little to.

The Boyne Delta Blueshawks packed them in at McSorleys Late Night Bar (thanks Michele and Michael Murray of that great venue) and Brian Maguire and Lynda Lucas likewise at Pinocchio’s as did Il Coro Italiano at the same venue (thanks Marco, Carlo and all the staff).

It was a great pleasure going around to stick up ‘Sold Out’ stickers for the Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny gig, which without a shadow of a doubt could be numbered as ‘the trad gig of the year’. Chris Meehan and his Redneck Friends set The Tennis Club alight, Sandford Park Schools new auditorium looked magnificent and Anne Enright in conversation with James Ryan and Neil Jordan and Pat McCabe were brilliant. All the literary events in Sandford Park were conceived by Charles Crockatt and were  ‘produced’ in a most professional manner by Charles ably assisted by Keith Lindsey.

Another Charles Crockatt concept was the ‘Monster Treasure Hunt’, which proved such a Monster hit with all who partook and uncovered something of a young genius in the winner, R.M.D.S. pupil Liam Ryan

Culture Night brought Thai Dancers to The Triangle, A Poem on The Underground Wall (at the Luas Station) and the wonderful Electric Picture Palace at Dartmouth Square, which was; I believe the biggest crowd at any event of culture night throughout the city.

Brendan Ellis delivered the goods once again with ‘A Patch of old Snow’, Ronan Sheehan, Nicola Gordon Bowe and Bryan McMahon gave illuminating ‘talks’ and the Taste and Sounds of Ranelagh were a gourmets and a music lover’s delight.

The Mark Cabena Battle of the Bands was great. The Rock fest that followed was outstanding and our music committee did an outstanding job ensuring all events went off smoothly.

But of course, the Family Fun has to be considered as the outstanding ‘hit’ of the festival. What a brilliant day with fantastic weather, Ranelagh Gardens never looked as well; the re-positioning of the staging area was an inspired choice by co-ordinator Marcus O’Connor. The Parade with the children from our four national schools was a show-stopper in itself and the entertainment acts were ‘fab’, a big thanks in this department goes to John Paul De Jonge who organised so many of the Street Performers and wined and dined them at his own expense. Bravo Marcus and John Paul.

Scoil Bhride looked terrific for The Mairead Ni Mhaoinigh/Manus Lunny gig and the Economic Debate featuring Dan O Brien, a very witty Damien Kiberd and two very wise owls in Ruairi Quinn and Noel Whelan.  The R.M.D.S. was stuffed for the launch of the book on its history and the fact that two other books were launched for the festival was unbelievable. Susan Roundtree’s ‘Ranelagh in Pictures’ and The Living Streets’ An Anthology of The Ranelagh Arts Festival are a most for us all in Ranelagh to send far and wide as Christmas presents (Please note all three books are available at our H.Q. at 26, Ranelagh)

The opening of The Ranelagh Village Market brought an extra bit of ‘razzmatazz’ about the place and really helped add to the athmosphere. Thanks to all at Ranelagh Village Market and Shelbourne Development.

Backstage (as it were) many people were ‘bevearing’ away, Our Treasurer Siobhan Lennon,’ looking after the money, Chloe O’Connor, our fundraising and sponsorship coordinator and ‘twitterer’ Our secretary Helen Minnes and Aoife Mulqueen co-ordinating the whole shooting gallery and Raj Gosal over-seeing our whole ‘internet’ campaign that was such a success. Kenny Worn was in ‘the art shop’ night noon and morning with Aileen Le Broquay and we had a whole army of volunteers that made sure everything went smoothly and Myra McAuliffe directed our P.R. campaign that secured us unprecedented press coverage. Special mention must go to William Harvey, Fiacc O’Brolchain, John Cusack and Douglas Ito who seemed to be everywhere I looked.

And apart from running the cine club Gerald Meehan did Trojan work helping out old stagers like myself understand the rudiments of ‘the internet’ as did Aoise O’Dwyer and Ian Temple.

Caroline Davin Power ensured everything ran smoothly in Schoil Bhride as did James Keating the event manager of the Chris Meehan gig.

A huge thanks must go to our brilliant photographic team. Daragh Owen and Kate Horgan have been with us from day one. Last year they were joined by Angel Luis Gonzalez and this year by Terry Ng and Tara Keane, and they have provided the festival with an amazing record of our events including video footage available on youtube.

A very special thanks must go to all our sponsors and we ask you to support them throughout the year but especially to all the people of Ranelagh for turning out in such great numbers and contributing to the special atmosphere that made RANELAGH ARTS FESTIVAL (FEILE RAGHNALLACH) 2009 an outstanding success.

DUBLIN TO GAZA One Concert – Two Cities 16th October 2009 @ Tripod, Dublin

Posted in News on October 6th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

DTOGOn 16th October, Dublin will extend the hand of friendship to the besieged city of Gaza when a very special concert will be transmitted live from Tripod in Dublin  and beamed  LIVE to  Gaza City – Two cities, One concert.

Celebrated Irish musicians Liam Ó Maonlaí, Lumiere, Kíla, Naisrin and Zahara El Safty will be joined on the bill by Palestinian singer Shadia Mansour, Dublin based Discovery Gospel Choir who will perform with renowned Iraqi/English  Rapper MC Lowkey. A night of brilliant music with a big message, the concert will be broadcast live on a big screen in Gaza city allowing the people of Gaza to enjoy the concert in Dublin and they in turn will say something to the Irish audience.

The evening will celebrate culture and use the power of music to unite people both here in Ireland and in the besieged city of Gaza. The organisers hope to focus attention on the ongoing siege in Gaza and also raise much needed funds for its rebuilding.

Despite 5 billion in aid pledged to Gaza, none of it has yet reached it’s people.  Access to the city is minimal, a complex system of tunnels surrounding Gaza known as the lungs of Gaza, is how all food, medicine, fuel and animals gain entry to the city. The tunnels are built by ‘siege breakers’, many of whom have been killed , their lives are in constant danger due the random bombings and collapsing tunnels. The people of Gaza are completely isolated from the international world, they cannot leave and now as a result of an almost total blockade people cannot enter. This special night offers a unique opportunity to show support for their plight, as they face another winter struggling with limited shelter and aid.

Due to live link up with Gaza the concert must start early! Gaza is two hours ahead. Doors open at 7pm

Dublin to Gaza: One Concert Two Cities @ Tripod

October 16th 2009

Tickets are priced at 15 euros and available from Ticketmaster with all profits from the night will go towards the rebuilding of Gaza.
